Christmas .....
We will suspend sending mail orders from Wednesday 4th December, starting again, weather permitting,  from 6th January 2025. Most of our plants will be under cover, dormant and probably not looking at their summer best, so we encourage you to look at our eGift Vouchers as an alternative.

Begonias - more info

We have a range of Begonias, mostly of the cane variety (having stiff upright stems supporting often heavily and attractively spotted leaves). Rhizomatous cultivars are shorter and bushier, the leaves arising from rhizomes (fat more or less horizontal stems which lie close to the ground). The leaves of most  Begonias are typically lop-sided, and are red on the underside, which adds to the leaf coloration especially when back-lit. The pink, red or white flowers are small but often produced in large bunches. All need shade from hot sun & make excellent houseplants. Grow in a loam-based compost for stability, with added grit or bark to make a free draining mix. They need to be kept on the dry side when growth slows in winter, especially if the leaves fall.  They need a minimum 10 °C to maintain growth, but we have found that most plants will survive near freezing temperatures, though most will lose their leaves. Many of our cane Begonias survived a couple of degrees of frost in our greenhouse.

Pot Sizes

Unless otherwise indicated our plants are supplied in the following pot sizes according to category. Dimensions refer to either the pot diameter (cm) or volume (litre);

  • Exotics/Conservatory & House Plants, Succulents: mostly as young plants in 7 to 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)  or 1 litre pots
  • Hardy Perennials, Ferns and Grasses: 1 litre (approx. 12cm diameter)
  • Hardy Shrubs and Climbers: 1.5 or 2 litre

The exact size of plants will vary with the growing season and may be cut back in accordance with normal pruning regimes or to fit in the box if they are excessively tall.
