Christmas .....

We will suspend sending mail orders from Wednesday 4th December, starting again, weather permitting,  from 6th January 2025. Orders placed after Wednesday 27th November will be sent after Christmas. Most of our plants are now under cover, dormant and not looking at their summer best, so we encourage you to look at our eGift Vouchers as an alternative.

Eucomis Care

When to plant- Plant Eucomis bulbs between March and May. In frost prone areas it is best to start the bulbs off in pots and grow them on somewhere protected like a greenhouse or porch and then plant them out in the garden from around the end of May (depending on your area)
Site and Preparation- They like a very sunny position and well-drained soil. When planting out mix some grit with the backfill soil and also put a layer of grit in the bottom of the planting hole.
Planting Depth- Plant bulbs about 15cm deep and at least 8cm apart
Feeding- Eucomis don’t need a huge amount of feed but it is beneficial to apply a granular feed of Blood Fish and Bone in early summer as they start to grow away.
After flowering- It is important with all bulbs to allow the leaves to die back naturally after flowering. Whilst they are still green they are photosynthesising and feeding the bulb for the following year.
Winter protection- Eucomis are not fully hardy and the bulbs need to be protected from frost. If you plant to leave the bulbs in the ground apply a good thick mulch in autumn. Otherwise you can lift the bulbs after they have died back and store them over winter somewhere frost free. If you are leaving them in containers then move these into a greenhouse/ conservatory over winter as there is a risk the compost may freeze right through.

Pot Sizes

Unless otherwise indicated our plants are supplied in the following pot sizes according to category. Dimensions refer to either the pot diameter (cm) or volume (litre);

  • Exotics/Conservatory & House Plants, Succulents: mostly as young plants in 7 to 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)  or 1 litre pots
  • Hardy Perennials, Ferns and Grasses: 1 litre (approx. 12cm diameter)
  • Hardy Shrubs and Climbers: 1.5 or 2 litre

The exact size of plants will vary with the growing season and may be cut back in accordance with normal pruning regimes or to fit in the box if they are excessively tall.
